The original German title is “Die Moritat von Mackie Messer.” The word Moritat refers to a type of medieval murder ballad that was performed by traveling singers. Because of this, the title can be translated as “The Murder Ballad of Mackie Messer.” The song tells the story of Macheath, a charming and mysterious serial killer who is also known as Mackie Messer, or “Mack the Knife.” The lyrics describe his dangerous reputation and the crimes associated with him.
