Gov’t applauds K-pop acts after historic 11-award haul at AMAs

K-pop artists won major categories at the 52nd American Music Awards this week, prompting Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young to send congratulatory messages Wednesday to BTS, KATSEYE and the singing voices of Huntrix from the animated film "KPop Demon Hunters" for their victories at one of the biggest music award shows in the United States. The haul underscored the genre’s evolution from a regional subculture into a dominant force in the global music industry, marked by both the triumphant return of established icons and the arrival of highly successful cross-cultural experiments. Leading the charge was BTS, the powerhouse boy group that claimed the night’s highest honor, Artist of the Year. The win marks the group's second time taking home the top prize, having made history in 2021 as the first Asian act to do so. Returning to full activities as a complete group this year, BTS also took home trophies for Best Male K-Pop Artist and Song of the Summer for their track "Swim," securing a hat trick. The ceremony also vaulted newer acts into the global spotlight. The multinational girl group

BLACKPINK star steals spotlight with 'unmatched aura'

Jennie once again proved why fans say no one does fashion quite like her. The BLACKPINK star dominated the spotlight Tuesday at a photo wall event for French luxury brand Chanel’s 2026 Metiers d’Art collection show held at the Centre Pompidou Hanwha in Yeouido, Seoul. Jennie drew attention with a bold styling combination that balanced a daring top with masculine-inspired classic tailoring, creating a look that felt both sensual and effortlessly confident. She wore a deeply plunging V-neck bodysuit featuring straps on the back that highlighted her slim silhouette. White trim details along the chest line and gold accents added a luxurious feel to the striking outfit. For contrast, Jennie paired the bodysuit with wide-leg trousers that elongated her proportions while giving the look a polished structure. Symmetrical gold buttons along the waistband reflected a subtle marine-inspired aesthetic, while a side stripe detail added a formal yet fashion-forward edge. The singer completed the styling with layered crystal and pearl bracelets on her left wrist and carried a black jacket and patter

'Wild Sing' revisits K-pop's early days with heart and humor

At a time when retro is back in style, a movie filled with the late 90s, early 2000s aesthetics of the K-pop scene paying homage to first-generation acts, such as H.O.T. and Shinhwa, does not come as a complete surprise. In the Korean comedy "Wild Sing," starring actors Gang Dong-won, Uhm Tae-goo and Park Ji-hyun and directed by Son Jae-gon, the ensemble faithfully reenacts the earlier days of the K-pop industry as top-ranking idol dance group Triangle. Gang plays Hyun-woo, the group's good-looking but somewhat clumsy leader, while Uhm and Park portray Sang-gu, the youngest member of the group and rapper, and Do-mi, the trio's sole female member who serves as the actual leader of the group behind the scenes, respectively. The film does a solid job in reviving the aesthetics of the past, ranging from a sand-filled playground (which have been mostly replaced with urethane foam blocks) where Hyun-woo practices his head spins to televised broadcasts featuring live telephone votes by fans for top singers of the week. In terms of music style, it also captures the mid-90s mood of the K-pop scen

People spend their lives chasing success, hoping to reach something brighter. On that journey, there are moments when we wonder whether the light we are chasing will truly make us brighter, or whether it is too distant, merely a dream we can never reach. Singer and actor Danny Ahn described his latest stage role in the play "At the Boundary of Light and Darkness" as a reflection on this idea. The production, which wrapped on Monday at the Sejong Center in Seoul, follows two parallel figures of d

BTS criticizes alleged Busan hotel price gouging ahead of concerts

BTS members have publicly criticized alleged price gouging by Busan accommodations, issuing a direct warning to business owners who are hiking room rates ahead of the group's concerts in the city next month. During a livestream on fan platform Weverse on Tuesday, BTS leader RM expressed his frustration over accommodation price hikes surrounding the event. "There is so much news regarding accommodations. It does not feel good," RM said. While acknowledging that room rates naturally fluctuate between peak and off-peak seasons, he urged business owners to exercise restraint, saying in the regional Busan dialect, "Let's not overdo it." Bandmates Suga and Busan-native Jimin agreed with his concerns. They said even their own relatives were struggling to find rooms and questioned whether charging several times the usual rate was too extreme. The remarks follow a growing online backlash against alleged price gouging in Busan. Fans criticized cases where some accommodations hiked rates to hundreds of thousands or even millions of won per night during the concert week. With BTS set to hold concerts

SEVENTEEN donates to UNESCO to support education in Laos

K-pop boy band SEVENTEEN has marked its 11th debut anniversary with a donation to support underprivileged students in Laos. The Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) announced Tuesday that the boy band made the donation for its Bridge Programme, which will help Laotian students with primary school diplomas to attend secondary school. Although secondary education is free of charge, few kids enroll because of miscelleneous fees, which they can't afford. The donation amount was not disclosed. "We are deeply grateful for SEVENTEEN's continued support since 2022," KNCU Secretary-General Hong Hyun-ik said in a statement. "This contribution will help marginalized learners in Laos access public secondary education and build a better future." The donation is part of an initiative that dates back to August 2022, when Pledis Entertainment, SEVENTEEN's management label, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the KNCU to launch the #GoingTogether campaign, aimed at closing educational gaps in underserved communities. The partnership has since grown considerably in scope. In November 2

Broadcaster apologizes for airing Stray Kids member Hyunjin’s childhood photo as murder victim

MBC Every1’s “Hidden Eye” production team apologized Tuesday for airing a childhood photo of Stray Kids member Hyunjin after falsely identifying it as a photo of a murder victim. The error occurred in December, when the true-crime commentary show used the photo as reference material while covering a murder case. It was later revealed that the image was a childhood photo of Hyunjin, prompting immediate complaints from fans. A production official for “Hidden Eye” apologized for the misuse of the photo in an interview with the Hankook Ilbo. “We have taken down the clips on YouTube, and the VOD for the episode in question has also been removed from most OTT (streaming) platforms,” the official said, acknowledging the production team’s mistake. The official explained that the error occurred while the crew was extracting reference photos from electronic devices used by the victim and provided by the bereaved family. The production team responded immediately after discovering the mistake, the official said, adding that it would double-check materials to prevent similar errors fr

"Swim" also topped the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band's seventh chart-topping single. All tracks from the album have exceeded 100 million streams on Spotify, including "No. 29," an experimental piece composed solely of the sound of the Sacred Bell of Great King Seongdeok.
