Genre or industry? Global music market questions definition of K-pop

Driven by the worldwide dominance of groups like BTS and BLACKPINK, the global music industry is debating what K-pop actually is. The phenomenon has grown beyond a traditional musical genre, evolving instead into a comprehensive, globally integrated content industry model. Experts argue that K-pop's unique characteristics defy standard classification. A single track typically blends multiple styles — including hip-hop, EDM, R&B, house, trap, synth-pop and ballad — into a composition where the sound rapidly shifts as the song progresses. Scholars call this genre-blending structure "hybrid music." International researchers echo this analysis, pointing to a "musical hybridity" that merges diverse cultures. Consequently, the industry treats K-pop as a comprehensive form of entertainment that combines hook-centric melodies, genre-bending structures, performance-focused choreography and high-quality music videos. The production process further separates the phenomenon from standard musical categories. Major agencies produce tracks through global song camps. These intensive sessions gather

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Oscar win sparks debate after acceptance speech is cut off

The animated Netflix hit “KPop Demon Hunters” celebrated a historic night at the Academy Awards — but its victory was quickly overshadowed by controversy after an acceptance speech was abruptly cut short on stage. The film’s original song “Golden” won Best Original Song at the 98th Academy Awards, held Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony was hosted by Conan O'Brien. The film also won Best Animated Feature, giving “KPop Demon Hunters” two Oscars in a single night. However, the celebratory moment sparked online debate after the acceptance speech for “Golden” was interrupted by the play-off music typically used to signal speakers to wrap up. EJAE, who was the singing voice for Rumi of the fictional idol group HuntRix in the film, spoke first on behalf of the performers. “Thank you so much to the Academy,” EJAE said. “Growing up, people made fun of me for liking K-pop. Now everyone is singing our song, and in all of the Korean lyrics. I’m so proud.” EJAE appeared emotional as she delivered her speech. But controversy erupted when producer Lee Y

BTS’ Gwanghwamun show sparks debate as city prepares unprecedented downtown lockdown

A massive outdoor comeback show by BTS in central Seoul is already stirring controversy, even before the music begins. Authorities are preparing an unprecedented level of security and traffic control around Gwanghwamun Square ahead of the group’s upcoming event, prompting complaints from some residents and online commentators who say the measures are excessive. The concert, titled “BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG,” will take place on March 21 in the historic square in central Seoul, according to organizers. Police and the city government expect as many as 260,000 fans to gather for the performance. To prepare for the crowd, officials have designated 31 buildings near the square as priority monitoring sites. Authorities have requested partial closures of building entrances and restrictions on rooftop and upper floor access. The measures are intended to prevent potential falls from high vantage points and to stop so-called “free riders” from watching the concert from nearby rooftops without tickets. Security preparations are extensive with more than 6,500 police officers from mult
