‘Princess’ image no more? IVE’s Jang Won-young sparks buzz with bolder, sexier style shift

    Korea Times May 19, 2026

Jang Won-young of K-pop girl group IVE is drawing attention online as fans debate whether the idol is moving away from her signature “lovely princess” image in favor of a bolder and more mature style. Long known for her bright, elegant and doll-like visuals since her days in IZ*ONE, Jang has recently been showcasing a noticeably different mood through fashion choices that lean more sensual and trend-driven. The latest wave of discussion began after the singer attended a photo call event for an Italian high jewelry brand wearing a black velvet tube top dress that highlighted a sleek silhouette and a more sophisticated image. The fitted styling emphasized both her tall proportions and glamorous aura, prompting strong reactions across social media and online communities. Fans said the look felt distinctly different from the youthful and “princess-like” styling often associated with the star during IVE’s earlier years. Another round of buzz followed after Jang uploaded new photos to social media on May 15, where she showed off a daring “sagging” fashion style — a trend in whi

HYBE launches new label ABD with planned girl group debut in 2nd half

    Korea Times May 8, 2026

K-pop powerhouse HYBE said Friday it has established a new label specializing in producing girl groups, with plans to debut its first act later this year. The label is named ABD, short for its brand slogan, "A Bold Dream," and reflects an approach that seeks to "imagine D instead of C after A and B," the company said in a statement. The label will be led by No Ji-won, head of artist planning at HYBE subsidiary Pledis Entertainment. Pledis' veteran producer Han Sung-soo, who has previously worked on artists including Seventeen, After School, IZ*ONE and TWS, will lead production for the new girl group, HYBE said. The planned debut will add to HYBE's roster of girl groups, which includes Le Sserafim under Source Music, NewJeans under ADOR, ILLIT under Belift Lab and Katseye under HYBE Labels.

'Catch Catch' syndrome: 'YENA-core' suggest new survival strategy in group-dominated K-pop scene

    Korea Times Apr 24, 2026

In a K-pop market dominated by groups, singer YENA has built a distinct musical identity as a solo artist. The response to "Catch Catch," the lead track from her fifth EP "LOVE CATCHER" released in March, suggests that her signature style is gaining momentum. Evolution of 'YENA-core' YENA, a former member of project girl group IZ*ONE, which was formed through Mnet's "Produce 48," debuted as a solo artist in 2022 with the track "SMILEY." Since then, she has moved across genres while developing a style often called "YENA-core." The term refers less to a repeated concept than to a recognizable mix of music, performance and visuals. It combines her bright energy, kitschy sensibility and cartoonish visuals with an addictive electro-pop sound. The appeal of "Catch Catch" rests heavily on that accumulated musical narrative. Her conceptual universe, which expanded through previous releases such as "SMILEY," "NEMONEMO" and "Being a Good Girl Hurts," has developed into a distinct sensibility that resonates with listeners. Strategic nostalgia A key factor behind the track's success is its use of seco
